What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD/BELL 427/5) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, effective 28 September 2006. It requires operators of specified Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Model 427 helicopters to inspect the installed tail rotor gearbox case, confirm whether an oil feed gallery is present, re-identify the case if the gallery is present, and, where it is absent, create the oil feed gallery in accordance with the manufacturer’s service bulletin instructions. The AD applies only to helicopters fitted with tail rotor gearbox case part number 406-040-406-109 and limited serial numbers: S/N 56001 through 56031, 58001 and 58002 (Applicability). Where affected gearbox cases are held as spares, the AD requires the same identification and modification actions before those spares are installed on an aircraft (Requirement 3; Compliance 3). The AD references Part I and Part II of Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 427-03-09, or later Transport Canada approved revisions, as the procedural authority for inspection, re-identification and modification steps (Requirement 1-2). The AD’s compliance schedule is explicit: the inspection/re-identification step must occur at the next gearbox disassembly or within 1,800 hours time in service after the last overhaul of the gearbox, whichever occurs first after the effective date of the AD; the modification to create the oil feed gallery must be completed before further flight after completion of the inspection step; spare gearbox cases must have the work done prior to installation (Compliance 1-3). The stated technical rationale supplied in the AD is that some tail rotor gearboxes lack the required oil feed gallery, which reduces oil supply to duplex bearing P/N 406-040-432-103 and could lead to bearing failure; the AD also notes that splash lubrication without the oil feed gallery is considered sufficient to prevent abnormal wear up to the 1,800 hour overhaul period (Background; Note). The AD refers to Transport Canada AD CF 2003-11 dated 28 April 2003 (Note).
