Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive (AD) is a safety order requiring owners of specific Bell 412 helicopters to fix a dangerous electrical fault that could cause engine failure.

The problem: Electrical connectors on the engine fuel valves (part number MS3456W14S-5S made by T.J. Electronics) can develop internal short circuits. This causes the fuel valve to rapidly oscillate between "open" and "closed" without warning, potentially starving the engine of fuel or causing erratic fuel flow.

Which aircraft are affected:

Bell 412 and 412NB helicopters
Serial numbers 33001 to 33138, and 33150

What must be done: Operators must follow the instructions in Bell Alert Service Bulletin 412-87-31 to inspect and replace the faulty electrical connectors.

Deadline: The work had to be completed before 1 March 1988.

Background: Field reports against some motor driven fuel valves indicate that with no prior warning the valve begins to oscillate between “open and closed”. The failure has been traced to an internal short circuit within the fuel valve connector P No MS3456W14S-5S manufactured by T.J. Electronics, and identified by the prefix TJE.
