Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive requires daily visual inspections of the horizontal stabiliser slats on specified Bell 407 helicopters (serials 53000–53498 and 53500–53512) until segmented slats (P/N 407-023-001-103) are fitted or identified as required. It also mandates retrofit or identification work per the manufacturer's Alert Service Bulletin with set completion dates.

CASA says the measure responds to an overseas slat departure and reports of cracked slat brackets; inspections may be done and certified by a trained pilot and the AD must be recorded on the aircraft maintenance release (Requirement 1; Compliance).

This Directive shall be entered on the Maintenance Release as maintenance required. The Requirement 1 daily visual inspection may be performed and certified by the Pilot in Command who has been trained to do the inspection by an appropriately qualified person. In this case, a copy of the Requirement document and this Directive is to be carried in the aircraft.

This amendment becomes effective on 7 August 2002.

Background: There has been an incident overseas where the horizontal stabiliser slat departed the aircraft. This directive is raised to ensure the security of the slat to prevent possible damage to one of the rotors which could lead to a loss of control of a helicopter. To correct the problem ASB 407-99-32 introduced segmented slat assemblies part number 407-023-001-101.

Amendment 1 is raised in response to the related Transport Canada AD, which mandates a visual inspection prior to modification action, in response to reports of the slat brackets cracking.

The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 18 May 2000.
