Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This mandatory Airworthiness Directive requires owners of specified Bell 222 and 222U helicopters to inspect the tail boom for cracking within 10 flight hours (from 3 May 1985) and every 25 hours thereafter, until a permanent modification is performed per Bell Alert Service Bulletins. It applies to the listed serial-numbered aircraft and terminates the inspection requirement once the modification is correctly completed.

The AD responds to discovered tail-boom skin cracks — one severe case damaged a longeron — to prevent tail-boom failure and possible crash.
