What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive amendment (AD/BELL 222/24 Amdt 1) concerning the main rotor hydraulic actuator support for certain Bell Helicopter Textron Canada (BHTC) 222-series helicopters. Mechanically, it does four things:
- Defines precise applicability: it applies to Model 222, 222B, 222U and Model 230 helicopters fitted with main rotor hydraulic actuator support part number 222-040-125-001 (see "Applicability").
- Requires an initial and recurring inspection process: a visual inspection for the presence of all dowel pins and for sealant between the support and the transmission, and torque verification of the support attaching nuts with specified thresholds and remedial actions (see "Requirement: 1.a" and "1.b").
- Specifies actions where minimum torque values are not met: removal and further inspection per the BHTC Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) paragraphs 5-7 if two or more nuts on an upper or lower set fail the torque threshold, or re‑torque to defined ranges with "plus tare" where fewer nuts fail (see "Requirement: 1.b(i) and (ii)").
- Imposes a verification obligation after any re-installation: Following any re-installation of the support, the nuts’ torque must be verified in accordance with Requirement 1 (see "Requirement: 2").
The directive sets mandatory compliance times: initial inspection within 25 hours time in service after 30 August 2007 unless already done; thereafter repeat at intervals not exceeding 600 hours time in service or 12 months, whichever occurs first. The post‑reinstallation torque check (Requirement 2) must be carried out between 20 and 30 hours time in service after re‑installation (see "Compliance"). The AD became effective on 30 August 2007 (see effective date). The stated safety trigger in the instrument’s background is a reported failure of the main rotor hydraulic actuator support that resulted in an accident to a Model 222U helicopter; Amendment 1 extends applicability to include Model 230 helicopters.
