Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This safety directive requires immediate replacement of counterfeit (fake) retention pins in the main rotor hub of Bell 212 helicopters. These pins hold critical tension-torsion straps (components that help manage stress on the rotor blades) in place.

Who it affects: All owners and operators of Bell 212 model helicopters.

What you must do: Follow the instructions in Bell Alert Service Bulletin No 212-91-68. This must be completed before the next flight after 17 October 1991.

Why it matters: Fake parts bearing part number 204-012-104-005 have entered the supply chain. While they look genuine, they are made from significantly weaker materials and could snap unexpectedly. If these pins fail in flight, the main rotor could detach, causing catastrophic loss of the aircraft and crew.

Applicability: All model 212 helicopters.

Requirement: Action in accordance with Bell Alert Service Bulletin No 212-91-68. Compliance: Prior to further flight after 17 October 1991.

Background: The manufacturer has become aware that bogus torsion strap retention pins P/N 204- 012-104-005 may have been purchased and installed in the main rotor hub assembly. The replacement pins have a significant reduction in material strength and could fail prematurely.
