Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This directive orders owners and operators of specific Bell 212 helicopters to fix a dangerous electrical fault in the engine fuel system.

Who it affects: Anyone operating Bell 212 helicopters with serial numbers between 30504-30999, 31101-31291, or 32101-32142.

What must be done: Operators must follow the manufacturer's instructions in Bell Alert Service Bulletin 212-87-46 to address faulty electrical connectors (part number MS3456W14S-5S) on the engine fuel valves. These connectors, made by T.J. Electronics, can develop internal short circuits that cause the fuel valve to rapidly switch between open and closed positions without warning — a serious flight safety hazard.

Deadline: All affected helicopters had to comply with this directive before 1 March 1988.

Why it matters: The faulty connectors could cause unexpected fuel flow interruptions, potentially leading to engine failure or loss of control.

P/NO MS3456W14S-5S

1/88

Applicability: Model 212 S No 30504 to 30999 and S No 31101 to 31291 and 32101 to 32142. Requirement: Action in accordance with Bell Alert SB 212-87-46.

Compliance: Prior to 1 March 1988.

Background: Field reports against some motor driven fuel valves indicate that with no prior warning the valve begins to oscillate between “open and closed”. The failure has been traced to an internal short circuit within the fuel valve connector P No MS3456W14S-5S manufactured by T.J. Electronics, and identified by the prefix TJE.
