Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This directive orders operators of specific Bell 212 helicopters to fix a dangerous fault in their emergency flotation systems—the equipment designed to keep the helicopter afloat if it lands on water.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Bell 212 helicopters equipped with emergency flotation Kit 212-706-042 that were delivered before 1 October 1981.

What must be done: The helicopter's emergency flotation manual actuation system must be modified and re-rigged (reconfigured) according to the manufacturer's instructions in Bell Textron Alert Service Bulletin No. 212-81-24.

Why it matters: Testing found that the manual inflation handle sometimes fails to deploy the floats when pulled. In a water emergency, this defect could prevent the helicopter from floating, endangering everyone on board.

Compliance requirement: The work had to be completed within 25 hours of flight time after 6 November 1981 (unless already accomplished).
