Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This directive mandates safety inspections of the auxiliary fins (small vertical stabilizers at the tail) on specific Bell helicopter models to check for fatigue cracks.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of:

Bell 206L series helicopters
Bell 206L-1 series helicopters
Only those with specific serial numbers listed in the technical bulletin referenced below
Only if the helicopter has not already been modified according to Part II of that same bulletin

Why it matters: Fatigue cracks (tiny cracks caused by repeated stress during flight) were discovered in the auxiliary fins of two helicopters operating overseas. These cracks could potentially lead to structural failure of the tail section, creating a serious flight safety risk.

What must be done: Operators must follow the inspection procedures detailed in Bell Helicopter Textron Technical Bulletin No. 206L-79-34, Part 1.
