What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) directed at specific Bell Helicopter Textron Canada (BHTC) 206 and Agusta Bell 206 series helicopters. It mandates an inspection of the main rotor pitch horn bearing, part number 206-011-105-001, and requires replacement of that bearing where an inspection shows replacement is necessary. The inspection must be carried out in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions in the Alert Service Bulletin specified for the helicopter model (Table 2), dated 25 February 2009 or any later revision approved by the Chief, Continuing Airworthiness, Transport Canada (Requirement 1). If the inspection indicates the bearing must be replaced, replacement must be made with a serviceable bearing before further flight (Requirement 2). The AD sets a compliance window for Requirement 1 of within 30 days after the effective date, and for Requirement 2 before further flight. The AD becomes effective on 22 October 2009 and is signed by James Coyne as Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority dated 10 September 2009. The stated technical hazard in the AD’s Background is that some bearings P/N 206-011-105-001 were manufactured without the required lubrication passage, which, if not corrected, could lead to loss of control of the helicopter.
Mechanically, the AD changes operator obligations from routine maintenance cycles to a mandatory, short-term inspection and conditional replacement focused on a specific part. It prescribes the inspection procedure indirectly by mandating compliance with model-specific Alert Service Bulletins: 206-09-120 for 206A and 206B models, and 206L-09-154 for 206L variants (Table 2). The AD identifies the precise population of helicopters by model and serial number ranges in Table 1; for example, 206A “All serial numbers”, and 206B “All up to 4660, including those converted from Model 206A”. The AD also cross-references Transport Canada AD CF-2009-34 dated 25 August 2009.
