Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This AD requires a one-time inspection of the pitch change link “universal” (PN 204-011-128-1) on Bell 205 helicopters to check for staking marks around each bearing face. If exactly six staking marks are found the part must be removed and destroyed. It affects owners/operators of Bell 205s fitted with that part after 1 Apr 1989 and addresses hydrogen‑embrittlement cracking that could cause rotor control loss. Inspections were due by 30 Sep 1989; new parts must be inspected before installation.

AD/BELL 205/55 Pitch Change Link Universal 11/89

Applicability: All models fitted with universals P/N 204-011-128-1 after 1 April 1989.

Requirement: Carry out a one time inspection of the P/N 204-011-128-1 universal for staking marks around each bearing face. If the universal has 6 staking marks around each bearing remove from service and destroy universal.

Note: Bell OSN 205-89-17 refers.

Compliance: By 30 September 1989. Thereafter prior to installation.

Background: The U.S. Army has detected cracks, due to hydrogen embrittlement, around the staking marks used to retain bearings within the universal. This Directive is raised to ensure defective new universals are not fitted to civil aircraft.
