Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive (AD) is a mandatory safety order issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

What it requires Operators of Bell 205 series helicopters must reduce the approved service life (known as 'life limits') of the main rotor hub inboard fitting — the critical component connecting the main rotor blades to the aircraft. Essentially, this part must be replaced or overhauled more frequently than originally planned.

Why it matters The directive addresses safety risks regarding metal fatigue or cracking in this high-stress component. If the fitting fails in flight, the main rotor could separate from the helicopter, leading to a catastrophic accident.

How to comply Owners must follow the specific technical instructions — including new hour limits, inspection methods, and replacement schedules — detailed in Bell Service Bulletin No. 205-78-3.

Who is affected All owners and operators of Bell Model 205 helicopters in Australia.
