Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a mandatory safety order for owners and operators of specific Beechcraft 76 Duchess aircraft.

What it requires: You must inspect and fix the bolts on the wing splice plates (the metal plates connecting parts of the wing structure) according to Beechcraft Service Bulletin No. 2038.

Why it matters: During routine checks, authorities discovered that the nuts on these bolts were 'bottoming out'—meaning they couldn't tighten properly against the metal surface. This creates a dangerous weak point in the wing structure that could get worse over time and potentially lead to wing failure.

Who must comply: Aircraft with serial numbers ME-3 to ME-377, ME-379 to ME-428, and ME-430 to ME-432.

When to act: Within 100 hours of flight time after 31 October 1985, or at the next scheduled maintenance check after that date—whichever comes later.

Plate Bolt Installation

10/85

Applicability: All model 76 with S/Nos ME-3 to ME-377, ME-379 to ME-428, ME-430 to ME-432. Requirement: Action in accordance with Beechcraft S.B. No. 2038.

Compliance: Within 100 hours’ time in service after 31 October 1985 or at the next scheduled inspection for Maintenance Release issue after 31 October 1985, whichever is the later.

Background: During an annual inspection, the wing spar lower splice plate nuts were found to bottom out on the threads. Threads bottoming out can create a progressively weaker joint in this critical area.
