What it does
Airworthiness Directive AD/BEECH 35/67 Amdt 6 (the AD) is a mandatory continuing airworthiness instrument issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under the Civil Aviation Act 1988 and the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998. It imposes prescriptive inspection, replacement and reporting obligations on all Textron Aviation (formerly Beechcraft) 35 series aeroplanes, commonly known as the Bonanza family, regardless of serial number. The AD is the sixth amendment of a directive that first became effective on 1 February 1996. Mechanically, the AD creates three distinct requirements. Requirement 1 mandates removal of inspection covers from wing attach fitting recesses every 12 calendar months and inspection for corrosion, loss of inhibitor, and blockage of drain holes. If visible corrosion is found, Requirement 2 (removal and inspection of wing bolts, washers, nuts and fittings) must be completed before further flight. Requirement 2 imposes a detailed removal and inspection regime with intervals that depend on operational category: for aircraft used only in private operations, inspection must occur within 100 hours time in service or 12 months from commencement (whichever occurs first) and not later than 10 years from initial installation of wing bolts, with reinspection every 10 years; for all other operational categories the initial threshold is 5 years from installation with reinspection every 5 years. Requirement 3 mandates retirement of wing bolts, washers and nuts from service and replacement with new hardware before 20 years time in service after first installation of new zero time wing bolts. However, the AD also provides an alternative: wing bolts may be maintained on condition in accordance with Table 201 of the Beechcraft Maintenance Manual 36-590001-9D Revision D2 May 29, 2024, Chapter 57. Note 6 adds a separate mandatory step: wing attach nuts must always be replaced with new items whenever wing attach bolts are removed for inspection. The AD also imposes mandatory reporting obligations: both nil findings of defects and confirmed defects from Requirement 2 inspections must be reported through CASA’s Defect Reporting Service, either online or via Form 404. The AD commences on 13 July 2025 and applies to all serial numbers within the stated applicability, with the note that the type certificate holder has not updated its shop manual to include other serial number ranges, so the maintenance listed in Requirement 2 is to be utilised for all serial numbers with reference to the wing bolt, nut and fitting requirements. The AD effectively overrides any less stringent maintenance schedule an operator might have followed, and it creates a binding legal duty to perform specific tasks at defined intervals, with failure to comply potentially attracting enforcement action under the civil aviation regulatory framework.
