What it does
This instrument is an Australian Airworthiness Directive (AD) titled AD/BEECH 300/20, dated 7/2007, that requires inspection of the nose landing gear fork (lower shock absorber assembly) on specified Beechcraft Model 300 aeroplanes and prescribes corrective action where cracks are found. Applicability is limited to Model 300 aircraft, serial numbers FA-1 through FA-168 and FF-1 through FF-19 (Applicability). The AD prescribes a specific inspection technique, referencing Part II of Raytheon Aircraft Company Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB) SB 32-2102 Revision 7, Revised: July 2003, and requires the incorporation of particular kit part numbers as the corrective measure if cracks are detected (Requirement 1-3; Note 1).
Mechanically, the AD directs: (a) an initial inspection using fluorescent liquid penetrant or magnetic particle methods as specified in the MSB; (b) if cracks are found, installation of Kit No. 101-8030-1S or Kit No. 114-8015-1S as applicable, in accordance with the MSB; (c) if no cracks are found, periodic repeat inspections (Requirement, Notes). The MSB procedures and the kit part numbers are normative for the AD’s required actions (Requirement).
The compliance timing is explicit. Unless already accomplished, the initial inspection must be completed within 200 hours time in service after 5 July 2007; where the corrective kit is required it must be incorporated before further flight; inspections are to be repeated at intervals not to exceed 200 hours time in service (Compliance 1-3). Note 1 states that incorporation of either kit is terminating action for the inspection requirements of this Directive.
The AD includes a background statement tying the required actions to reports of cracks in the nose landing gear fork received by the FAA and to the safety risk of reduced residual strength leading to separation failure and potential loss of control during takeoff, landing and taxi operations (Background). The instrument becomes effective on 5 July 2007 and is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (signature block, 9 May 2007). The AD also cross-references FAA Corrected AD 2004-23-02 Amdt 39-13857 (Requirement Note 2; Background).
