Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive is a safety rule requiring all hot air balloons to carry a portable fire extinguisher. It mandates that operators must install and maintain a fire extinguisher weighing at least 1 kilogram to protect against fires caused by gas leaks.

What you must do:

Install a compliant extinguisher if your balloon doesn't already have one. It must be either a dry powder type (preferred) or a BCF vapourizing-liquid type, and must meet Australian Standard AS 1841 or equivalent international standards.
Maintain the extinguisher according to the manufacturer's instructions or Australian Standard AS 1851.1.

Why it exists: Hot air balloons use propane burners and fuel tanks. If a gas leak occurs while the burner is lit, a fire can start quickly. Having an accessible fire extinguisher is considered essential safety equipment to protect passengers and crew.
