|---|
| Applicability: | All Hot Air Balloons. |
|---|---|
| Requirement: | If not already accomplished install a dry powder type or a BCF vaporising-liquid type portable fire extinguisher of at least 1 kg capacity, complying with Australian Standard AS 1841 or equivalent.Note: A dry powder type extinguisher is the preferred type. |
| Compliance: | Before issue of a certificate of airworthiness or before 10 May 1995. |
| This Amendment becomes effective on 6 August 2010. | |
| Background: | A fire extinguisher is considered an essential safety item in a hot air balloon in the event of a gas leak with the burner alight. This amendment removes the maintenance requirements for the Airworthiness Directive as it is duplicative to the Maintenance regulation requirements. CAR 2 defines a Fire Extinguisher is an aircraft component. CAR 41(2) requires the Balloon maintenance schedule to include provision for the maintenance of all aircraft components. CAR 2A defines what can constitute Approved Maintenance Data.CASA recommends the Fire Extinguisher Manufacturer’s Maintenance and Overhaul requirements be nominated as the approved maintenance data for the Fire Extinguisher. The requirements for installation of a Fire Extinguisher remain unchanged. The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on8 December 1994. |
