Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this means: The aviation safety regulator (CASA) is ordering airlines and aircraft owners to fix a specific safety issue on certain British Aerospace jet airliners.

Who is affected: Owners and operators of BAe 146 and Avro 146-RJ series aircraft — specifically, those that haven't already had modifications HCM01490A or C installed.

What must be done: Aircraft operators must follow a technical service bulletin (British Aerospace Mandatory Service Bulletin 55-13-01490B) that deals with drain holes in the elevators (the movable flaps on the tail that control the aircraft's pitch).

Why it matters: Water was collecting inside the elevators after steep climbs. If this water can't drain out, it can throw off the balance of the elevators, potentially making the aircraft difficult to control. This directive mandates a fix to ensure the drain holes work properly.

Deadline: The work had to be completed before 15 September 1995.
