What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/BAe 146/122 Nose Landing Gear Axle Spacer 8/2006, mandates a physical modification to the nose landing gear on the BAe 146 and AVRO 146‑RJ series aeroplanes. The directive’s operative instruction is: “Modify the nose landing gear per SB 32‑174‑70676A Initial issue or later EASA approved revision” (Requirement). The AD sets an explicit compliance deadline: the modification must be carried out “Prior to 31 May 2007” and the AD itself “becomes effective on 3 August 2006” (Compliance; Effective date). The applicability is stated unambiguously: “All Models BAe 146 and AVRO 146‑RJ series aeroplanes” (Applicability).
Mechanically, the AD replaces the existing nose wheel abutment rings with a revised design. The background section explains the failure mechanism the modification is intended to eliminate: the original abutment ring is manufactured with an internal chamfer on one side so that, when fitted correctly, “the wheel clamping loads are not applied to the machined radius at the root of the stub axle.” However, if the ring is installed the wrong way round it becomes “displaced outboard from the correct position,” which permits wheel installation while leaving “the wheel nut locking bolts will not be fully engaged.” That condition allows “normal operational forces” to loosen the wheel nut and “the wheel assembly to detach from the aircraft,” and it may also result in clamping loads being applied to the stub axle radius, possibly causing damage (Background).
The AD therefore prescribes replacement of the existing rings with revised rings “that ensures that if during a wheel change, the abutment ring is fitted the wrong way round, will prevent the nose wheel retaining nut from engaging with the axle threads” (Background; Requirement). The AD also points to related authority: “Note: EASA AD 2006‑0137 dated 23 May 2006 refers” (Requirement note), and identifies the service bulletin to be used for the modification: “SB 32‑174‑70676A Initial issue or later EASA approved revision” (Requirement).
