Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This directive mandates a one‑time inspection of the main landing‑gear retaining bolt on specified Boeing 767s (line positions 1–600, except 579 and 586), to be done per Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 767‑32A0157 within 500 flight hours or 300 cycles after 6 Nov 1997. It responds to a report of a disconnected retaining bolt that could lead to gear fracture and collapse; affected operators/maintenance organisations must fund and carry out the inspection and any corrective work.

AD/B767/98 Main Gear Forward Trunnion Joint 12/97

Applicability: Model 767 series aircraft, line positions 1 through 600 inclusive, except line positions 579 and 586.

Requirement: Inspect the main landing gear retaining bolt in accordance with Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 767-32A0157.

Note: FAA AD 97-16-03 Amdt 39-10093 refers.

Compliance: Unless already accomplished, within 500 flight hours or 300 flight cycles after 6 November 1997, whichever occurs later.

This airworthiness directive becomes effective on 6 November 1997.

Background: The FAA received a report indicating that a disconnected retaining bolt was found in the main landing gear forward trunnion joint of a Model 767 series aircraft. The actions specified by this Directive are intended to prevent aft-acting trunnion loads from being transferred to the main gear beam, and consequent fracture and collapse of the main landing gear.
