Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority requires operators of Boeing 767s fitted with Pratt & Whitney JT9D‑7R4 or GE CF6‑80A engines to replace thrust reverser flow restrictors with check‑valve restrictors per the relevant Boeing Alert Service Bulletin, with a compliance deadline of 31 January 1996. The mandate (borne by operators) aims to eliminate seal‑leakage that could allow in‑flight reverser deployment; a matching FAA AD exists.

AD/B767/80 Thrust Reverser System Flow Restrictors 11/94

Applicability: All Boeing 767 series aircraft equipped with Pratt and Whitney JT9D-7R4 or General Electric CF6-80A series engines.

Requirement: Replace the existing thrust reverser system flow restrictor devices with check valve restrictors in accordance with Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 767-78-0064 for aircraft equipped with CF6-80A series engines or Alert Service Bulletin B767-78-0065 for aircraft equipped with P&W JT9D-7R4 series engines.

Note: FAA AD 94-14-01 also refers.

Compliance: Unless previously accomplished, no later than 31 January 1996.

Background: This AD is issued following reports of leakage across the actuator piston seals which may result in an inadvertent deployment of a thrust reverser in flight and subsequent reduced controllability of the aircraft.
