Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This directive mandates safety modifications to fuel tank access doors on early-production Boeing 767 aircraft to prevent catastrophic fuel leaks.

Who it affects:

Airlines and operators of Boeing 767 aircraft with manufacturing line numbers 001 through 234 (essentially the first 234 aircraft built)

What it requires:

Strengthen fuel tank access panels to better withstand impacts from engine debris or objects thrown by aircraft tyres
Follow the technical instructions in Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 767-28A0019
Complete all modifications before 30 October 1991

Why it matters: Without this upgrade, fuel tank access panels could be penetrated by debris during flight or takeoff/landing, risking fuel leaks or fires. The modification ensures compliance with international aviation safety standards (FAR 25.963(e)) designed to prevent fuel tank damage from external impacts.

AD/B767/42 Fuel Tank Access Doors 9/90

Applicability: All model 767 with line numbers 001 through 234. Requirement: Action in accordance with Boeing Alert SB 767-28A0019. Compliance: Prior to 30 October 1991.

Background: The incorporation of the Service Bulletin enables aircraft to comply with FAR 25.963(e) which provides for some fuel tank access panels to have a higher resistance to impact to reduce possibility of penetration from engine debris or objects thrown by the aircraft tyres.
