Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

Requires operators of Boeing 767 aeroplanes (line positions 002–409) with entry or service doors that have slide rafts to carry out the technical actions set out in FAA AD 93‑01‑19. The amendment (effective 29 April 1993) notes an optional retrofit that, if installed, stops the need for repeated operational checks for a possibly broken door counterbalance torsion spring. Operators therefore must choose between ongoing inspections or a one‑time modification, shifting compliance costs and procedures accordingly.

AD/B767/24

Amdt 1

Door Counter Balance Torsion Spring 5/93

Applicability: Model 767 series aircraft with entry or service doors equipped with slide rafts; line positions 002 through 409.

Requirement: Action in accordance with the technical requirements of FAA AD 93-01-19 Amdt 39- 8473.

Note: Boeing ASB 767-52A0053 Revision 2 refers.

Compliance: As specified in the Requirement Document with a revised effective date of 29 April 1993.

Background: A broken counterbalance torsion spring condition would require extra effort to unlatch the door, and manual assistance to open the door in an emergency. A broken spring could jam the counterbalance assembly and prevent opening of the door during an emergency evacuation. Amendment 1 is issued in response to a new FAA AD which provides for an optional installation which, when accomplished, constitutes terminating action for the currently required repetitive operational checks.
