Plain English Summary

4/10 complexity

This directive requires operators of Boeing 767-300 aeroplanes fitted under FAA Supplemental Type Certificate STC ST01869AT-D to modify the Passenger Entertainment System (PES) and update the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM). It also bans installing that PES via the STC unless the modification and AFM revision are done.

It affects airlines and maintenance organisations for those specific aircraft because the changes let flight crew remove PES power and follow updated emergency procedures to manage smoke or fumes (Background; Requirement 1–3).

AD/B767/181 (Continued)

Background: This Directive requires the modification of the PES installed under STC ST01869AT- D, together with the revision of the AFM. This action is required to ensure that, when necessary, the flight crew is able to remove power from the PES and is advised of appropriate procedures to perform these actions. Inability to remove power from the PES during a non-normal or emergency situation could result in inability to control smoke or fumes in the aeroplane flight deck or cabin.
