What it does
This Civil Aviation Safety Authority directive (AD/B747/85 Amendment 5) mandates implementation of a corrosion prevention and control program for specified Boeing 747 series aeroplanes by reference to a United States Federal Aviation Administration airworthiness directive and associated Boeing documents. The directive (Requirement) states, in full: "Action in accordance with the technical requirements of FAA AD 90-25-05 R1 Amdt39-15327." It also sets out reporting rules tied to a three‑level corrosion classification: "Corrosion classified as level 1 need not be reported. Level 2 corrosion may be consolidated with a sixty day report of corrective action, and submitted to the local CASA Field Office under cover of a single SDR. Level 3 corrosion shall be reported by SDR." The AD identifies two Boeing documents in relation to the FAA AD: Boeing Document D6-36022 Rev D (or later FAA‑approved revision) is associated with the FAA AD; and Boeing Document D621U400‑MRB, Revision Dec 2007 (or later FAA‑approved revision) is an approved alternative means of compliance (AMOC) to FAA AD 90‑25‑05 R1, but only for Boeing Model 747‑400 series aircraft. The AD also instructs that references in the FAA AD to certain FAA officials "shall be read as Civil Aviation Safety Authority Field Office." Compliance is required "as specified in the Requirement document," and the amendment took effect on 2 September 2009.
The AD therefore does three mechanical things. First, it imports the technical inspection, prevention and corrective actions set out in the FAA AD as the operative obligation for Australian‑registered aircraft within the listed 747 variants. Second, it defines the domestic reporting protocol for discovered corrosion by level and ties Level 2 reporting to a consolidated sixty‑day corrective action report filed with the local CASA Field Office under a single "SDR" cover. Third, it recognises specific Boeing documents as associated material and as an AMOC for a subset of the fleet, and it replaces the FAA official contact points named in the FAA AD with CASA Field Office contact points.
