Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This directive requires operators of Boeing 747 series aircraft to inspect the outboard end fitting of the wing landing-gear support beam for corrosion and cracks (visual and ultrasonic) to prevent structural failure that could damage nearby control cables and hydraulic lines.

Initial and repeat inspection timing is specified (early-life threshold, periodic intervals, accelerated checks if corrosion is found), and completing the Boeing service-bulletin rework ends the inspection requirement.

Cracked fittings are to be reworked or replaced before further flight.

If corrosion only is found - carry out ultrasonic inspection for cracks at intervals not exceeding 6 calendar months and carry out rework prior to exceeding 1 year.

Background: Country of origin AD. Cracking of the end fitting initiated by corrosion could, if not detected, lead to separation of outboard end of beam with possible damage to control cables and hydraulic lines in the area.
