Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument cancels a previous aviation safety directive (AD/B747/51) that applied to Boeing 747 aircraft.

What it means:

The old rule about inspecting or repairing fuselage frames in the aft (rear) cargo bay no longer applies
From 14 January 2010, this Australian directive is formally withdrawn

Why it changed: The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a new directive (FAA AD 2009-25-11) on 10 December 2009 that covers the same safety issue. Australian regulations now recognise FAA directives issued after 1 October 2009 as valid airworthiness directives under CASR Part 39, so the separate Australian rule is no longer needed.

Who is affected: Owners and operators of Boeing 747 series aircraft. They must now comply with the FAA directive instead of this cancelled Australian rule.
