Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This safety directive requires operators of specific Boeing 747 aircraft to inspect and fix dangerous cracks in the fuselage frame.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Model 747 series aircraft listed in Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 747-53A2416, Revision 1.

The safety problem: Fatigue cracks have been discovered in the "body station 1265 edge frame" (a structural part of the aircraft body between supports called stringers 23 and 27). If these cracks spread, they could cause rapid decompression — a sudden and dangerous loss of cabin pressure during flight.

What must be done: Operators must follow the technical instructions in American aviation safety directive FAA AD 2000-02-10. This includes:

Initial inspections of the affected area
Ongoing repetitive inspections to catch new cracks
Repairing any cracks found

When: The directive took effect on 20 April 2000.
