Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This mandatory FAA airworthiness directive requires operators of Boeing 747 production-line aircraft 1–868 (except freight-only) to inspect girt bar support fittings at main deck exit doors for corrosion, following FAA AD 96-23-05 and Boeing Service Bulletin 747-53A2378.

The inspections prevent slide detachment during evacuations; compliance was required per the AD’s schedule, effective 27 February 1997.

AD/B747/170 Main Entry Door Girt Bar Support Fitting 3/97

Applicability: Model 747 series with line numbers 1 through 868, excluding freighters and special freighters.

Requirement: Inspect in accordance with FAA AD 96-23-05 Amdt 39-9810.

Note: Boeing Service Bulletin 747-53A2378 Revision 1 refers.

Compliance: As specified in the Requirement Document with an effective date of 27 February 1997.

Background: The FAA received reports of corrosion on the floor structure supports for the escape slides of the main deck entry doors. The corrosion was found during scheduled deployment tests of the main entry door escape slides. Uncontrolled corrosion could result in separation of the escape slide from the lower door sill during deployment, and subsequently prevent proper operation during an emergency.
