Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This AD requires operators of specified Boeing 747s to inspect inboard engine strut-to-diagonal brace attach fittings for cracking per the referenced FAA AD and Boeing service bulletin. Amendment 2 expands which aircraft are covered and adds a further inspection after reports of cracking and severing. Operators bear inspection and modification costs; installing the SB’s cover-plate can terminate recurring inspections. The AD adopts FAA/Boeing technical procedures and timing rather than restating them.

Amdt 2

Inboard Engine Strut-To-Diagonal Brace Attach Fitting

1/96

Applicability: Model 747 series aircraft as listed in Boeing Service Bulletin (SB) 747-54-2062 Rev.

Requirement: Inspect the inboard strut-to-diagonal brace fittings for cracking in accordance with FAA AD 95-20-05 Amdt 39-9383.

Note: Boeing SB 747-54-2062 Rev. 7 refers.

Compliance: As specified in the Requirement Document with a revised effective date of 4 January 1996.

Background: A number of operators reported cracked fittings found in service. Amendment 1 reflected the revision status of SB 54-2062 which allowed terminating action including installation of a cover plate to seal a gap in the web. Amendment 2 is issued in response to reports of cracking and severing of the attach fittings. This amendment expands the applicability and requires an additional inspection.
