What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/B737/306), issued under the authority of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and signed by David Punshon (Delegate of CASA) on 20 July 2007, imposes mandatory maintenance and part-replacement requirements on a defined subset of Boeing 737-100 and -200 series aeroplanes. The instrument becomes effective on 30 August 2007 and requires compliance within six months after that effective date unless the action has already been accomplished (see Compliance, Applicability and Effective Date fields in the AD).
Mechanically, the AD creates two alternative compliance paths for affected aeroplanes. Operators must either:
- A: test the horizontal stabilizer trim actuator P/N 10-61326-4 or P/N 10-61326-5 for stall torque in accordance with Boeing Service Bulletin No. 737-27-1101 dated 1 February 1980 (or a later NAA approved revision); replace any actuator found to have less than 350 inch-pounds of stall torque with a serviceable actuator P/N 10-61326-4, -5, or -6; and thereafter conduct repetitive torque tests for P/N 10-61326-4 and -5 at intervals not to exceed the maximum intervals shown on the "Actual Stall Torque/Maximum Test Interval" chart, Figure 2, in that service bulletin; or
- B: replace the stabilizer trim actuator P/N 10-61326-4 or -5 with Boeing P/N 10-61326-6 in accordance with the same Boeing service bulletin, with such replacement being the terminating action for the AD.
The AD explicitly ties the required procedures to Boeing Service Bulletin No. 737-27-1101, dated 1 February 1980, or a later revision that has been approved by the national aviation authority (NAA). The stated aim in the AD’s Background field is "to assure sufficient horizontal stabilizer trim capability."
The instrument is limited in scope by an Applicability statement. It applies to "All Boeing 737-100 and -200 series aeroplanes certificated at takeoff weights in excess of 97,800 pounds and containing the horizontal stabilizer trim actuator P/N10-61326-4 or P/N 10-61326-5." The AD also includes a note about production line numbers, stating that aeroplanes from line number 482 and on were delivered with actuator P/N 10-61326-6, and that the AD "will apply to those 737 aeroplanes line number 482 and on if P/N 10-61326-4 or -5 have been exchanged for P/N 10-61326-6." The AD refers to FAA AD 80-09-05 Amdt 39-3760 dated 6 May 1980.
