What it does
AD/B737/294 Amdt 2 is an Australian airworthiness directive issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations. It mandates text changes to the Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) for certain Boeing 737 series aeroplanes, focused on cabin pressurisation procedures and flightcrew oxygen mask use. The directive requires operators to insert two specific revisions into the AFM. The first revision, applicable to all affected models (737-100 through -900 series), inserts a statement into the Normal Procedures section: “For normal operations, the pressurization mode selector should be in AUTO prior to takeoff.” The second revision, applicable across the same models but split by generation, inserts a detailed procedure for responding to the warning horn. For earlier models (737-100 through -500) this goes into the Emergency Procedures section; for later models (737-600 through -900) it goes into the Non-Normal Procedures section. The inserted procedure describes conditions for an intermittent or steady warning horn: an intermittent horn in flight indicates cabin altitude at or above 10,000 feet, an intermittent horn on the ground indicates improper takeoff configuration when advancing thrust levers, and a steady horn in flight indicates improper landing configuration. The procedure instructs the crew to turn oxygen masks and regulators on and to 100% and establish crew communications, then perform the CABIN ALTITUDE WARNING OR RAPID DEPRESSURIZATION checklist. It also provides ground crew instructions for an intermittent horn on the ground. The AD also allows operators to comply by inserting a copy of the AD itself into the AFM, or by incorporating the same wording into a general revision of the AFM. Additionally, the AD provides optional actions for compliance with older directives (AD/B737/208, AD/B737/216, AD/B737/255) by using revised wording for the horn response checklists, and permits use of an approved FAA Alternate Means of Compliance (AMOC) Letter 130S-09-134a dated 28 April 2009 as an alternative way to satisfy requirement 2 of the AD. The compliance timeframe is 60 days after the effective date of the amendment, which is 27 September 2013. The directive results from reports of aeroplanes failing to pressurise and flight crews failing to react properly to the cabin altitude warning horn, with the stated purpose of preventing hypoxia-induced incapacitation and loss of control.
