What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive that mandates inspection and corrective work on specific wire bundles and associated fuel vapour barrier areas on early-model Boeing 737 aeroplanes. Mechanically it requires three discrete acts. First, a "detailed inspection" of wire bundles located below the passenger compartment, above the centre fuel tank, in the zone aft of station 540 to approximately station 663.75 at right buttock line (RBL) and left buttock line (LBL) 24.50, and an inspection for damage to the fuel vapour barrier area below those bundles where applicable (Requirement 1). Second, rectification of any discrepancies found in those inspections, performed in accordance with Boeing Service Bulletin (SB) 737-28-1208, Revision 1, dated 25 August 2005 (Requirement 2). Third, adjustment and replacement of wire bundle clamps located aft of station 540 and installation of a protective sleeve on the upper bundle of the run at station 616 (RBL and LBL 24.50), again per the SB's Accomplishment Instructions (Requirement 3). The directive makes later revisions of that SB acceptable only if they are approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration as an Alternate Method of Compliance to FAA AD 2006-03-12 (explicit acceptability provision).
The directive sets the compliance timing: the inspection in Requirement 1 must be carried out within 60 months after the effective date of the Directive, while corrective actions mandated by Requirements 2 and 3 must be completed before further flight after the Requirement 1 inspections. The directive is effective 13 April 2006 and is signed by a CASA delegate (James Coyne, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority), with the document dated 3 March 2006. The directive applies specifically to Boeing 737-100, -200, -200C, -300, -400 and -500 series aeroplanes (Applicability).
