What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/B737/251 (12/2005), requires operators of specified Boeing 737 series aeroplanes that are fitted with two Smiths Industries Aerospace Flight Management Computers, part number 171497-05-01 or 176200-01-01, and which are installed with particular operational program software (OPS) versions, to update software and carry out configuration checks. The Directive identifies the affected OPS versions as U10.3, U10.4, U10.4A and U10.5, and applies to Model 737-300, -400, -500, -600, -700, -700C, -800 and -900 series aeroplanes (Applicability). The central requirements are set out as two interrelated actions. Requirement 1 mandates installation of an updated OPS and certain associated software in the left and right FMCs, plus configuration checks to confirm correct installation, in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Boeing Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 737-34A1801 or ASB 737-34A1821, as applicable. Requirement 2 mandates that, if an incorrect software version is found during any configuration check required by Requirement 1, the operator must reinstall the applicable software in accordance with the same ASB before further flight (Requirement 1, Requirement 2).
The Directive also provides an alternative compliance route. Optional installation in accordance with Boeing Service Bulletins (SB) 737-34-1768 or 737-34-1879, which install OPS version U10.6 and accompanying software (including OPC, MEDB where applicable, NDB and, if applicable, CDS OPC), is accepted for compliance with the corresponding Requirements so long as the SB Accomplishment Instructions and the Directive’s sub-paragraph conditions are met. The AD specifies compliance timing: Requirement 1 must be completed within 180 days of the Directive’s effective date; Requirement 2 must be completed before further flight after the configuration check (Compliance). The AD became effective on 24 November 2005 and cites FAA AD 2005-19-19 Amdt 39-14284 as a reference (Note 3; Background; effective date).
