What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/B737/229 Amdt 1, imposes mandatory maintenance and inspection actions on Boeing Model 737 -100, -200, -300, -400 and -500 series aeroplanes. Mechanically, the Directive requires operators and maintainers to carry out the actions set out in FAA AD 2004-06-18. The instrument states, in the Requirement cell, that operators must take "Action in accordance with the instructions as detailed in FAA AD 2004-06-18." The Compliance cell restates that compliance must be "As detailed in the compliance section of FAA AD 2004-06-18 with a revised effective date of 13 April 2006," and the Amendment itself becomes effective on 13 April 2006.
Technically specific measures identified in the Background are: periodic leak checks of the lavatory drain system, periodic replacement of seals, replacement of “donut valves” with other valves, and a revision to the leak check interval. The Background explains that these measures are added in order to prevent the build up of "blue ice" and the problems arising from dislodgement of that "blue ice" from the aeroplane. The AD supersedes a prior domestic directive, AD/B737/25 Amdt 1, because the content of the older requirements "has changed significantly" and the previous requirements "are no longer considered satisfactory to prevent the build up of 'blue ice'." The Amendment also makes a non-substantive title change, removing the word "Forward" from the title to reduce confusion about which lavatory drain systems are affected.
In short, the instrument mandates that affected 737 series aeroplanes be maintained in accordance with the procedural and compliance details of FAA AD 2004-06-18, adds mandatory replacement of specific components and intervals, and does so with an effective date of 13 April 2006. The document is signed by a CASA delegate, Jayaprakashan Ambali, and dated 21 February 2006.
