What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/B737/215), issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under subregulation 39.1(1) of CASR 1998, mandates inspection and corrective action for specific hydraulic accumulators installed on certain Boeing 737 aeroplanes (see Applicability) (opening paragraph; Applicability). Mechanically, the Directive requires operators to inspect hydraulic accumulators in two distinct systems, determine whether the part number is BACA11E2 (vendor part numbers 2660472-2 or 2660472M2), and if so, replace the accumulator with a new or modified unit in accordance with the Boeing Special Attention Service Bulletins (BSASB) referenced in the Requirement section (Requirements 1-4). The AD also forbids the installation, as replacement parts, of hydraulic accumulators having the subject part numbers from the effective date of the Directive (Requirement 5; Compliance).
The Directive divides required actions by system: (a) landing gear brake system accumulators (Requirements 1 and 2) and (b) thrust reverser actuation system accumulators (Requirements 3 and 4). For each system the action is: inspect to determine P/N (Requirement 1 or 3); if the P/N matches BACA11E2 (vendor P/N 2660472-2 or 2660472M2), replace the subject accumulator per the relevant BSASB (Requirement 2 or 4). The BSASBs specified are BSASB 737-32-1334 Revision 1, dated 1 March 2001 (for the landing gear brake system), and BSASB 737-78-1068 Revision 1, dated 1 March 2001 (for the thrust reverser actuation systems) (Requirements 1-4; Notes 1 and 2).
Timing is compulsory: inspections and replacements required by Requirements 1-4 must be completed within 18 months of the AD’s effective date or before the aircraft exceeds 6,000 flight hours from that effective date, whichever occurs sooner (Compliance). The prohibition on installing the specified accumulators (Requirement 5) is effective immediately from the AD’s effective date (Compliance). The AD expressly accepts inspections and replacements performed before the effective date if accomplished per earlier editions of the BSASBs (BSASB dated 11 May 2000 for the landing gear SB and BSASB dated 8 June 2000 for the thrust reverser SB) (Alternative Means of Compliance).
