What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/B737/202 Amdt 2) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) prescribes operational and documentation limitations for the centre fuel tank and its pumps on certain Boeing 737 series aeroplanes. The Directive mechanically requires the following primary actions (as set out in the Directive text).
-
Requirement 1: Revise the Limitations section of the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) to include a set of certificate limitations about centre tank fuel pump operation and fuel quantity monitoring. The AFM revision may be accomplished by inserting a copy of the Directive into the AFM. The inserted limitations specify:
- Centre tank fuel pumps must be OFF for takeoff if centre tank fuel is less than 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) with the aeroplane readied for initial taxi.
- Both centre tank fuel pump switches must be selected OFF when centre tank fuel reaches approximately 1,000 lb (450-500 kg) during climb and cruise or 3,000 lb (1,400 kg) during descent and landing.
- The fuel pumps must be positioned OFF at the first indication of fuel pump low pressure.
- The centre tank fuel quantity indication system must be operative to dispatch when centre tank mission fuel is to be carried.
- Operational notes on the CONFIG indicator (it will annunciate when centre tank fuel exceeds 1,600 lb and pumps are OFF) and procedural cautions for the CONFIG non-normal procedure relative to takeoff and descent/landing fuel quantities.
- A low-fuel exception allowing both centre pumps to be selected ON and use of all centre fuel in a low fuel situation.
- An allowance permitting zero fuel gross weight plus centre tank fuel to exceed the maximum zero fuel gross weight by up to 5,000 lb for takeoff/climb/cruise and up to 3,000 lb for descent/landing when main tanks are not full, provided centre-of-gravity effects are considered.
