Plain English Summary

5/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive requires operators of Boeing 737‑100/200/300/400/500 series aeroplanes to provide shielding and separation of wiring routed to the fuel tanks from adjacent wiring, using either a CASA‑approved method or one of two specified FAA Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs). Compliance must be completed before 10 March 2003. CASA says the measure follows testing and re‑examination of accidents; Amendment 1 adds the two FAA STCs as alternative methods of compliance, leaving operators to arrange and pay for the modification.

AD/B737/158 Amdt 1 (continued)

Background: The original issue of this Directive required installation of components to provide shielding and separation of the fuel system wiring (that is routed to the fuel tanks) from adjacent wiring. The issue of the referenced FAA Airworthiness Directive was prompted by testing results, obtained in support of an accident investigation, and by re-examination of possible causes of a similar accident.

This Amendment introduces an alternative method of compliance.

The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 9 August 2001.

Signature of James Coyne, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
