What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/B737/113 Amdt 1, 10/2005) by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority makes compliance with a Boeing Alert Service Bulletin mandatory for a defined set of Boeing 737 aeroplanes. The directive applies to "Model 737 series aeroplanes, having a main rudder power control unit (PCU) and vernier control rod bolts that are identified in Boeing Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 737-27A1202 Revision 2, dated August 7, 1997" (Applicability). The directive requires operators to carry out the specific test, inspection and replacement actions enumerated in Boeing ASB 737-27A1202, namely: perform the test requirements of Part I of the Accomplishment Instructions; replace the rudder PCU in accordance with Part II; replace the dual servo valve and a bolt in accordance with Part III; replace the vernier control rod and two dual load path bolts in accordance with Part IV; and replace two nutplates on the control rod in accordance with Part V (Requirement, items 1-5).
The AD specifies compliance timing: the tests are to be completed every "A" check and every time a PCU is replaced, and the replacement actions listed at items 2-5 are to be completed "Within 24 months after 26 February 1998" (Compliance). The text states "The compliance times remain unchanged by this issue." The AD also records that "Accomplishment of the requirements of AD/B737/201 (FAA AD 2002-20-07) constitutes terminating action for the requirements of this Directive" (Requirement, terminating action). The instrument becomes effective 29 September 2005 and is signed by David Punshon, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 19 August 2005 (effective date and signature). The Background section explains the operational aim: to ensure correct operation of the secondary servo slide of the dual servo valve in the rudder PCU and to have all rudder PCUs replaced with a modified item "which is not prone to jamming." The directive also notes it supersedes CASA ADs B737/79 and B737/99 and cross-references FAA ADs and earlier Boeing service material (Background; Notes 1 and 2).
