What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/B-2/32) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) prescribes mandatory inspection, measurement, replacement, assembly and reporting requirements for the tail rotor vertical shaft/gearbox components of Brantly Helicopter, Inc. Model B-2, B-2A and B-2B helicopters where the relevant parts are present (see Applicability). The AD is technical and prescriptive: it identifies specific part numbers (P/N) and physical tolerances for components in the tail rotor vertical drive and requires removal of the tail rotor vertical gearbox assembly, targeted inspections and dimensional checks, replacement of components that fail tolerance or inspection, reassembly following specified service bulletin procedures and reporting of inspection findings. The directive’s stated safety objective is to detect fatigue cracking and prevent shaft failure and consequent loss of helicopter control, and it was prompted by an accident and an incident report of fatigue cracking of a shaft (Background).
Mechanically, the AD imposes the following mandatory steps:
- Remove the tail rotor vertical gearbox (P/N 278-200), vertical shaft (P/N 249-10), vertical shaft housing (P/N 249-3) and intermediate gearbox bushing (P/N 252-4) for inspection (Requirement 1(a)).
- Perform a sequence of component-specific inspections and dimensional measurements with explicit pass/fail criteria and tolerance bands. Examples include the flange retainer P/N 15-17 inside diameter tolerance of 1.5050 to 1.5060 inches (Requirement 1(b)), the shaft outer diameter tolerance of 0.6240 to 0.6250 inch at all points (Requirement 1(h)(iv)), and maximum straightness gap of 0.007 inch when rolled on a flat surface plate (Requirement 1(h)(v)).
- Subject the shaft to magnetic particle inspection for cracks, and require removal if any crack, subsurface discontinuity or pitting is present (Requirement 1(h)(vi)).
