What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive addressed to a specific configuration of ATR 42 series aeroplanes. The directive applies to "ATR 42-200, -300 and -320 series aircraft" and requires a specific maintenance action: "Carry out ultrasonic cleaning of the Propeller Control Unit servo ball screw on Hamilton Sundstrand 14SF5 propellers in accordance with Hamilton Sundstrand Component Maintenance Manual 61-21-07" (see Applicability, Requirement). The compliance timing is specified in three alternative triggers: (a) before the component reaches 10,500 flight hours since new or since last critical inspection; (b) before further flight if contamination is found; and (c) before further flight if anomalies are found during production acceptance tests (Compliance). The AD is dated and signed by a CASA delegate and states it "becomes effective on 2 August 2007" (signature and effective date lines). The AD also contains a short factual "Background" explaining operational incidents of propeller pitch lock, the identified ball screw contamination on the pitch control unit, and the intended safety rationale for the cleaning action.
Mechanically, the instrument introduces a mandatory cleaning procedure for a defined propeller component of ATR 42-200/-300/-320 aeroplanes equipped with Hamilton Sundstrand 14SF5 propellers, to be performed in accordance with the manufacturer's Component Maintenance Manual (CMM 61-21-07). It establishes specific timing thresholds (10,500 flight hours or immediate action if contamination or anomalies are found during acceptance testing) that create discrete compliance points in an operator’s maintenance programme. The AD also cross-references an earlier French DGAC airworthiness directive (DGAC AD 2002-070-090(B) R1 dated 15 May 2002), which it notes without elaboration (Note). The AD therefore changes the maintenance obligations for affected aircraft by adding a required cleaning action and by imposing conditional immediate grounding-type obligations when contamination or anomalies are present, as expressed by the "Before further flight" compliance phrasing.
