What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) titled AD/AT 800/11, dated 8/2008, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (delegate David Villiers). It prescribes mandatory equipment-modification action for a defined fleet of Air Tractor AT-802A aeroplanes. The AD is explicit in three mechanical outcomes.
First, it identifies the precise population to which the directive applies: Air Tractor AT-802A with serial numbers -0003 through -0282 (the Applicability row). Second, it sets out a mandatory corrective workflow for the aircraft overturn skid plate: where an overturn skid plate with part number (P/N) 11411-1-500 is already installed, operators must install P/N 11411-1-501 modification kit; where no overturn skid plate is installed, operators must install overturn skid plate kit P/N 11411-1-502. In both alternatives the AD permits the use of an FAA-approved equivalent P/N (Requirement row). Third, it fixes a compliance deadline: the required action must be carried out within 180 days after the AD’s effective date, and the AD’s effective date is stated as 31 July 2008 (Compliance row; effective-date line).
The AD also cross-references related technical/regulatory material: it notes FAA AD 2008-11-17 and Snow Engineering Service Letter #97, revised 7 November 2007 (Requirement/Note). The background section supplies the hazard rationale: accident reports for other Air Tractor models (AT-301 and AT-401) indicated an overturn skid sequence where the tail-first skid caused the windshield and overturn tube to act as a scoop, permitting foreign material to enter the cockpit; original-design downhill bolts attaching the forward end of the skid plate have been reported to break in overturn accidents, permitting the skid plate to rotate and the forward end to intrude into the cockpit. The AD’s mechanical aim is therefore to ensure overturn skid plates are installed on the listed AT-802A aircraft and, if already installed, that their front and rear connections are modified to prevent the bolt-failure mode described (Background row).
