What it does
This instrument is Amendment 1 to Airworthiness Directive AD/AT-6/1 concerning wing attach angles on a defined set of Rockwell (North American) and Autair (Noorduyn) AT-6 family aeroplanes. It sets mandatory inspection, reporting and repair requirements targeted at the inboard and outboard wing attach angles, and imposes restricted operating conditions to allow positioning flights for the inspection. The instrument applies to Models AT-6 (SNJ-2), AT-6A (SNJ-3), AT-6B, AT-6C (SNJ-4), AT-6D (SNJ-5), AT-6F (SNJ-6), BC-1A, Harvard (Army AT-16), SNJ-7, and T-6G aircraft, all serial numbers (Applicability).
Mechanically, the AD requires: (1) a fluorescent penetrant inspection of all inboard and outboard, upper and lower wing attach angles of both wings, excluding nose angles; (2) replacement of any cracked angles before further flight; and (3) a written report of the initial inspection results to the FAA, even if no damage is found and even if an inspection was previously performed (Requirement 1-3). The AD authorises limited movement to permit the inspection, with explicit operational restrictions on such positioning flights, including prohibition of acrobatic manoeuvres and flights into known or forecast moderate or severe turbulence, day VFR only, single-pilot operation only, and no passengers (Requirement 3). The document also provides a one-time interim allowance for up to 10 hours time in service to reposition an aircraft for inspection, provided the repositioning occurs no later than 30 days after 10 June 2005 (Compliance 3).
The AD prescribes initial and recurring compliance timing: initial inspection before further flight after 10 June 2005 unless an inspection was already completed within the last 15 hours time in service; thereafter inspections at intervals not to exceed 200 hours time in service (Compliance 1). Reporting of the inspection results must occur within seven days after the Requirement 1 inspection or within seven days after 10 June 2005, whichever is later (Compliance 2). The amendment became effective on 17 June 2005 and was signed by the CASA delegate David Villiers on 14 June 2005.
