What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/AS 355/95) issued 16 May 2007 and effective 18 May 2007 mandates inspections and, where required, a structural modification for certain Eurocopter AS 355 (Twin Ecureuil) series helicopters. Mechanically, it requires operators to do the following actions, in the order presented in the AD itself:
- Requirement 1: Confirm whether the fuselage centre cross-member at station X 2165 and structural doublers at stations X 2325 and Y 269 are installed, using the Accomplishment Instructions paragraph of Eurocopter Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 53.00.23 original issue, or a later EASA-approved revision. If those items are already installed, no further action is required.
- Requirement 2: If the cross-member and/or doublers are not installed, perform a visual or dye-penetrant inspection of the centre cross-member at station X 2325 in the area around the attachment point of the tail rotor directional ball-type control sheath stop, as detailed in ASB 53.00.23. If no crack is found, check the tail rotor control rigging before further flight and repeat the Requirement 2 inspection at intervals not to exceed 55 flight hours until the modification in Requirement 3 is completed. If any crack is detected, flight is prohibited.
- Requirement 3: Install the cross-member at station X 2165 and the doublers at stations X 2325 and Y 269 in accordance with the Appendix paragraph of ASB 53.00.23 original issue, or a later EASA-approved revision.
The AD sets compliance windows: Requirements 1 and 2 must be carried out within 10 flight hours or 1 month after 18 May 2007, whichever occurs first; Requirement 2 inspections are to be repeated at intervals not exceeding 55 flight hours until Requirement 3 is accomplished; Requirement 3 must be completed within 12 months after 18 May 2007. The AD explicitly cross-refers to EASA Emergency AD 2007-0139-E and to ASB 53.00.23 (original issue or later EASA-approved revision) for the inspection and installation instructions.
