What it does
This Directive (AD/AS 355/87 Amdt 1, effective 28 June 2006) imposes mandatory operational and modification measures on a defined subset of Eurocopter AS 355 (Twin Ecureuil) helicopters equipped with certain Goodrich electric hoists. The Directive addresses a discovered risk of untimely squib firing on hoist systems which could cause the hoist cable to be cut (Background). Mechanically, it requires four discrete steps (Requirement): (1) deactivation of the hoist squib and affixing of placards in the cockpit and cabin near the hoist operator as specified in paragraph 2.B of Eurocopter Alert Telex (AT) 25.00.84 (Eurocopter AS 355 ASB 25.00.84); (2) adherence to the operating instructions in paragraph 2.D of AT 25.00.84; (3) adherence to the operating instructions in paragraph 2.B of AT 25.00.84 prior to installing a hoist; and (4) a wiring modification to eliminate the ground from the hoist squib as specified in paragraph 2.B of AS 355 ASB 25.00.85. Timing is specified per requirement: deactivation and placarding must be done before the next hoisting operation for Requirement 1; Requirement 2 must be complied with immediately after Requirement 1; Requirement 3 must be done prior to installing a hoist; Requirement 4 must be done within 30 days after the Directive’s effective date or before installation of an unmodified hoist (Compliance).
The Directive limits its applicability by helicopter model and hoist fitment (Applicability): AS 355 E, F, F1, F2 and N helicopters fitted with Goodrich electric hoists 76370-XXX (all motor types) not modified per MOD 073318 (or not modified per Eurocopter ASB 25.00.85 issued 16 November 2005), or Goodrich hoists 76370-XXX not fitted with the Auxilec motor. The Directive allows later revisions of the referenced service bulletins approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to be used for compliance. The Directive notes that EASA AD 2006-0164 is relevant (Note).
