What it does
This directive imposes a mandatory inspection, measurement and conditional operational restriction for sliding doors on certain Eurocopter AS 355 (Twin Ecureuil) series helicopters. It requires operators to measure two specific dimensions, apply threshold criteria, and either permit or prohibit door operation in flight on the basis of those measurements. Where door operation in flight is prohibited, a placard specifying the restriction must be affixed to the instrument panel. The inspection is required before the next flight after 3 July 2002, and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 100 flight hours. The directive limits its applicability to AS 355 versions E, F, F1, F2 and N that are fitted with sliding doors and that have not incorporated certain modifications or a referenced Eurocopter service bulletin (MOD 073287 and/or MOD 073290 or Eurocopter Service Bulletin No. 52.00.22). The technical measurement and decision steps are to be carried out in accordance with paragraph 2.B.1 and 2.B.2 of Eurocopter AS 355 Alert Service Bulletin No. 05.00.39 Revision 2.2 (the Requirement document). The directive records that it was issued in response to a DGAC report of an aft roller dislodgement in flight caused by severe rail wear, and notes that Amendment 1 converted an earlier Alert Telex to an Alert Service Bulletin and introduced an additional check criterion; Amendment 2 aligns with a new EASA AD and limits applicability to unmodified aircraft. The instrument becomes effective on 26 October 2006, and is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (David Villiers).
