Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is a mandatory safety order requiring a one-time inspection of the main rotor shaft oil jet on specific Eurocopter AS 355 helicopters. The oil jet is a small nozzle that sprays lubricant onto the main rotor mast bearing. Owners must verify it was installed correctly according to the manufacturer's technical instructions (Eurocopter Telex Service No 10087.SI/0353/94).

Who it affects: Operators of AS 355 series helicopters with main rotor shaft part number 355A37.0000 (all dash numbers) that have flown less than 100 hours since new or since last major overhaul.

Why it matters: If the oil jet is installed incorrectly, the main rotor bearing won't receive adequate lubrication. This can cause bearing failure, potentially leading to loss of the main rotor and catastrophic crash. The directive specified completion by 6 January 1995.
