What this does

This Airworthiness Directive mandates a safety fix for specific helicopter cargo hooks. It requires operators to install a spring unit on the electrical release mechanism of certain cargo hooks to stop them from opening accidentally.

Who is affected

Owners and operators of Eurocopter AS 355 (Twin Ecureuil) helicopters that are fitted with a cargo hook using the SIREN S1609-5 release unit (part number 704A41-811-017).

What must be done

The cargo hook assembly must be modified according to the manufacturer's technical instructions (Aerospatiale Service Bulletin 25.22). This involves fitting a spring unit to the electrical release system.

Why this matters

Without this modification, the cargo hook could inadvertently open during flight, causing suspended loads to drop unexpectedly. This creates a significant safety risk to people and property on the ground, as well as to the aircraft itself if the sudden weight shift affects flight stability.
