What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) directed at a specific engine/airframe combination. It requires operators to implement a particular maintenance action specified by the engine manufacturer, and to repeat that action at fixed operating-hour intervals that depend on the type of oil used and on the engine oil-history. The AD applies to TURBOMECA turboshaft engine ARRIUS 2F fitted to EC 120B helicopters, and it mandates carrying out paragraph 2 of Turbomeca Mandatory Alert Service Bulletin No A319 79 4802 or a later DGAC-approved revision (captioned in the source under "Requirement"). The AD becomes effective on 1 September 2005 (the source line "This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 1 September 2005.").
Mechanically, the directive targets the check-valve piston O-ring in the engine lubrication unit. The background statement explains that incidents on ARRIUS 2 engines were traced to oil-passage blockage caused by excessive swelling of that O-ring; the blockage can interrupt lubrication and may lead to an uncommanded in-flight shutdown ("Background" paragraph). The AD therefore requires inspection and/or replacement actions described in the referenced Turbomeca Mandatory Alert Service Bulletin paragraph 2, and then mandates recurrent application of the same requirement at specified operating-hour intervals ("Requirement" and "Compliance" paragraphs).
Timing is specified in two parts. An initial action must be performed if an engine has exceeded a threshold number of operating hours: within the next 50 operating hours if the engine’s operating hours are greater than the relevant threshold (300 hours for engines operating with HTS-class oil, and engines with unknown oil history or engines that used to operate with HTS-class oil but no longer do; 450 hours for engines using STD-class oil since introduction into service). Thereafter, the directive prescribes repeat intervals: every 300 operating hours for engines in the HTS/unknown-history category, and every 500 operating hours for engines operating with STD-class oil (the "Compliance" table). The AD references DGAC AD F-2005-122 and an EASA approval number (No 2005-6069 dated 12 July 2005) as related documents ("Note").
