What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, published by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and identified as AD/APU/18 (3/2005), mandates corrective actions for fuel leaks on specified Hamilton Sundstrand auxiliary power unit models T‑62T‑46C12 and T‑62T‑40C14 (APS 500R). The AD applies to APUs that have particular fuel filter housing assemblies installed, specifically part numbers 4951627, 4951960, or 4952039 (Applicability). The corrective measures required are the installation of a bracket onto the fuel filter housing assembly for the T‑62T‑46C12 model in accordance with Hamilton Sundstrand Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. ASB‑4503067‑49‑9 dated 2 December 2003, and for the T‑62T‑40C14 (APS 500R) model the installation of a bracket per ASB‑4504112‑49‑22 Revision 2 dated 4 October 2004, unless the bracket is already installed (Requirement). Where brackets were installed using the original issue of ASB‑4504112‑49‑22 dated 2 December 2003, a one‑time inspection for proper gap and adjustment, if necessary, is required using paragraph 2.B. and 2.D.(1) of the Accomplishment Instructions of ASB‑4504112‑49‑22 Revision 2 (Requirement). The AD sets the compliance window as the earlier of 500 hours time‑in‑service or six months after the AD’s effective date (Compliance). The AD became effective on 17 March 2005 and is signed by a CASA delegate (effective date and signature). The stated unsafe condition motivating the AD is reports of failed or cracked fuel bypass buttons on the fuel filter housing that can protrude beyond the internal o‑ring seal and cause fuel leakage; leaking fuel can lead to fire or explosion (Background). The AD also notes that installing a fuel filter assembly with a part number not listed in the AD for the T‑62T‑40C14 APS 500R model constitutes an optional terminating action to the AD’s requirements for that model (Requirement, Note 2). The AD refers to FAA Airworthiness Directive 2004‑24‑03 (Note 3).
